4 essential tips to write an amazing explainer video script

Updated: Jan 21, 2019

An explainer video is a very powerful way to tell your audience a convincing story about your business, product or service. The first step to have your own explainer video is always the script. A well written explainer video script is the basis to every successful and engaging video. In this blog I will give you 4 essential tips to write an amazing explainer video script.

1. Use 'you' and 'your'

Always speak directly to your audience by using pronouns like “you” and “your”. This helps the viewer of your video feel personally addressed.

2. Problem - Solution - Explain - Action

The best explainer video scripts use the 'problem - solution - explain - action' model. It is very important to focus on your customer when writing a script. Your video should be telling a story about your customer instead of your company.

First you have to make sure you present a problem in your video your customer will recognize. This will make sure you grasp the attention of your customer so they will keep watching your video for a solution to the problem. Try asking yourself why does my company exist? The answer is simple: because your customers have a problem.

Because the potential customer recognized this problem, they know the solution you have for them is the perfect fit. Ask yourself the questions: how do I solve my customers problem? How is my service or product helping my customers?

After telling your customer about how your solution helps them, make sure to explain what your product or service consists of and how your company works. In what way do you stand out from your competitors? What is your unique buying reason? This is the only part of the explainer video script where the focus is on your organization.

After explaining your solution, end the video script with a call to action. What's next for the customer? What do you want him or her to do?

3. Keep it short

The attention span of your average website visitor is shorter than the attention span of a gold fish. It really is! Nobody is going to watch a 10 minute video if you can tell the same message in under 2 minutes. This makes it very important to keep the video short. The maximum length of an engaging video is 2 minutes (approx. 300 words) but my advice is to keep the length between 1 and 1:30 minutes.

4. Use your 'party elevator pitch'

Imagine yourself being at a party talking about your business to someone you don't know yet. You always have your 'party elevator pitch' ready right? Try writing this elevator pitch down, this will be a good start. Don't forget to include the humor you use in this 'party pitch' in the script.
